AbstractThe brake process is composed of drivers’ brake reaction and drivers’ deceleration after brake. In order to understand driver’s collision avoidance behavior, it is important to understand how driver maneuver after brake. Experiments was conducted on Tongji University Driving Simulator to analyze the behavior of drivers after brake with different Lead Vehicle’s(LV) decelerations (0.3g, 0.5g, 0.75g) and different initial headways (1.5s, 2.5s). Among the 140 cases where drivers avoided collisions only through brake, difference of drivers’ collision avoidance behavior were compared by Brake Pedal Rate, Time to 25% Brake, Time to 50% Brake, and Time to Maximum Brake. Results indicated that a) brake pedal rate was faster under higher level of risk; b) experienced drivers tended to have higher brake pedal rate compared to the novice drivers; c) compared with the change in LV’s deceleration, driver was more sensitive to the change in braking headway.
